NeOn Toolkit Screencasts

Attempting the impossible for The Open University - multiple module Screencast production within a tight budget and an inflexible timeline. All in a day’s work for yours truly.

To be honest, it was approximately four months from beginning to end. If all the resources were in a single location it wouldn’t have been a problem – but we were pulling in purpose-made screen recordings from contributors all across Europe. And, for the majority of them, English wasn’t their primary language.

By way of demonstration, here’s just one of over 30 software training screencasts I produced for the OU in 2010:

Note: Smoothness of play will depend upon your internet connection. Please wait while the video file buffers at the beginning.

It’s all in the plug-in. Apparently.

The set of screencasts are designed to show software engineers and students how to familiarise themselves with the open-source software toolkit, called the NeOn Project. This was a pan-European software development project funded by the European Commission and led by the Open University’s Knowledge Media Institute (KMi).

My role was to oversee the production of screencasts by 14 partner bodies, pre-edit their screen video captures to a tight schedule, manage the transcribing and preparation of voice-over scripts, liaise with the voice artist and then synchronise the commentaries with the final edited piece prior to the preparation of output master recordings intended for display on the NeOn-Toolkit web portal.

To see more of these training videos, visit the Plugins section of the NeOn Website and click a “movie” link in the right column of the page.
