Podcasting

Podcasting is such a new form of communication that few people have actually heard of it, let alone know what it is. It's not surprising, since the noble art of Podcasting has only been around since August 2004.

It was the marriage of "broadcasting (via the internet)" and the ubiquitous Apple iPod that led to the new audio art form being dubbed the podcast. The cencept is very simple, however; it's really just a downloadable audio programme that can be copied across to an iPod or other MP3 player and listened to on the move. Or even whilst seated!

Podcasting is a great tool for web-based communication not just for nerdy, webby geeks but for almost every individual looking to extend his or her voice over the web. It's also of great value as a promotion and PR tool for small and medium-sized enterprises, social groups, churches, special-interest groups and even corporations.

Broadcasters like the BBC were quick to pick up on the potential for Podcasts as a way of distributing content that doesn't merely synthesise and replicate existing broadcast output but provides additional, complementary, information, tips, advice and contextual information. If it's OK for the Beeb, it's OK for me.

For me, Podcasting is the best possible use of the internet to date. I love it!
